Sport Chalet has put together a sampler of two amazing winter activities.  This program offers you the chance to experience Ice Climbing on Day 1 and Backcountry Skiing or Snowboarding on Day 2.  This is a great way to try two new sports in one shot.

Course Itinerary: Sport Chalet Two Day Ice and Snow Weekend

Day 1

 

Meet your guide in the morning. Gear hand out and detailed orientation of ice climbing and equipment: crampons, ice tools, and ice protection. You will get to try many methods and styles for : Footwork, tool placement, and efficiency.

 

Day 2

 

Meet your guide at the Sierra Mountain Guides Backcountry Ski Center in June Lake .  Check that everyone is prepared with the proper gear for the day and head out to the backcountry for in-the-field training. We teach uphill ski/snowboard techniques to increase your safety, efficiency and comfort . We'll cover proper stride, pacing, tracksetting, routefinding, trail-breaking, kick-turns, and more. Downhill instruction includes tips for efficient transitions, terrain analysis, and skiing/snowboarding in backcountry snow with a pack.

Perquisites:

  • For the ice climbing day you don't have to have prior rock climbing experience.
  • Must have the ability to walk on uneven ground and have reasonable fitness.
  • Intermediate- advanced downhill skiing/snowboarding skills.

  • All necessary ice climbing equipment:
    • Harness
    • Helmet
    • Belay Device
    • Boots
    • Ice Tools
    • Crampons
  • All group equipment (ropes, protection, etc.)
  • Avalanche Safety Equipment, as needed
  • AMGA train and/or certified guide

Not included:

  • Rental ski/snowboard touring equipment (Available from Sport Chalet)
  • Personal winter clothing
  • Lodging or transportation in the June Mountain area

Ratio:

  • 6 climbers/skiers to 1 instructor
  • 12 guests maximum

Additional Information:

  • Flights to Mammoth from LAX, San Francisco and San Diego for easy travel
