The East Side to Southern California This route is only available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday all year long. The limiting factor is step 1, the Eastern Sierra Transit bus. Be wary of holidays, it’s probably best to call ahead.

Step 1: Catch the Eastern Sierra Transit Authority Southbound Bus in your Eastside town of choice:
You’ll end up at Ridgecrest City Hall at 11:45 am.
Step 2: Ride the Kern Regional transit bus from Ridgecrest City Hall at 1:30 pm to Carl’s Jr. in Mojave at 2:57 pm. $4 and you pay the driver. For more information call 1 800 560 1733
Step 3: Take a different Kern Regional Transit Bus from Carl’s Jr. in Mojave at 3:18pm to the Lancaster Metrolink Train Station at 4:18 pm. $2 and you pay the driver. For more information call 1 800 560 1733
Step 4: Buy your train ticket at the vending machine. It’ll be $10.50 to Union Station. The next (and last for the day) train leaves at 5:50 PM for the Los Angeles area. This train line ends at Union Station at 7:50pm. www.metrolinktrains.com (800) 371-LINK(5465)
Step 5: Once you’re in the LA megalopolis, public transit can be pretty intimidating. Don’t worry, it scares us too. If you’re going to the Airport, read on to step 6. If you’re going somewhere else, well, there are an infinite number of options and you’ll have to figure that out on your own.
Step 6 (To LAX airport): In Union Station proceed to Bus Stop 9. You’ll be looking for the FlyAway bus. The bus comes by every half hour, costs $4, and the transit time is 45 minutes or less. Factor all that into your flight plans if you can. I’d guess you’re looking at arriving at the airport as late as 9 or 9:15 pm. Whew, you’ve made it. At least you didn’t have to rent a car.
Totals: 10 to 13 hours, depending on starting and ending locations. $32-47 depending on where you start and end. |
