Mt. Gilbert North Couloir Mt. Gilbert is yet another tremendous Sierra couloir. In the fall the North Couloir is 900' of 50 to 65 degree alpine ice climbing. There is some exciting scrambling and climbing from the top of the Couloir to reach the summit. This is a reasonable two day climb with incredible views and some great climbing. Mt. Gilbert is a somewhat unknown peak but we highly recommend this Sierra alpine adventure.
Approach Mt. Gilbert from the South Lake trail head. Start up the Bishop Pass trail and break off at the Treasure Lakes trail. Follow ledges and slabs to the cirque at the base of Gilbert and camp. There will be time on day one to practice skills and get tuned up for the climb.
Day 2
Climb the North Couloir and return to camp. Pack up and head back to the cars.
