Valdez Adventure Ski Week

Can you imagine a better way to experience Alaska’s Chugach range?  Neither can we.  Our ski week will fulfill your Alaska skiing dreams.  Through a combination of ski touring and helicopter assisted ski touring we’ll cover a lot of ground in seven days.  This is a low ratio, low impact, cost effective ski week that will leave you with a lifetime of memories and ski runs that only dreams are made of.  Valdez is the epicenter of alaska ski touring.

TRIP ITINERARY: Valdez Adventure Ski Week

DAY 0

Welcomed by your guide(s) at the Valdez airport.  We will do equipment checks and go by van to the lodge.  Immediately following a safety meeting we can get out the maps for a Chugach overview. We’ll be dining and spending the night at the lodge.

DAY 1

 

Thompson pass tour day.  On our first day we’ll get our ski legs on a tour from the pass.  We’ll refresh our group safety, glacier travel, touring techniques, and get a feel for the snow conditions. 

DAY 2

Helicopter bump day. We will get a heli bump to the top of a peak and spend the rest of the day touring back to the lodge. 

DAY 3

We will tour off of the pass and return to the lodge .

DAY 4

We will tour off of the pass and return to the lodge .

DAY 5

Helicopter bump day. We will get a heli bump to the top of a peak and spend the rest of the day touring back to the lodge. 

DAY 6 We will tour off of the pass and return to the lodge .

DAY 7

Pack everything up and head to the Valdez airport where your guide(s) will see you off.

Prerequisites:

  • Advanced-expert downhill skiing skills
  • Ability to control speed and execute fall-line turns in control and comfort in difficult snow conditions (deep powder, heavy and/or moist snow, breakable crust, firm or icy, etc.)
  • Ability to execute hop turns on 40 degree+, firm slopes, coming to a complete and immediate stop at the finish of each turn
  • Ability to sideslip forward and backward, with edge control, on steep, firm slopes
  • Experience ski touring in the backcountry using ski touring equipment (boots, bindings, skins, transceiver, shovel, probe, etc.
  • Ability to make uphill facing kick-turns in an uphill track on a slope
  • Very good fitness
