Always looking for the next adventure in Patagonia, the Alps, or the big walls of Yosemite, Matt is a rock climber at heart. Growing up in Pittsburgh, he found a mentor who taught him the basics of his craft. He then took a one-way flight to Yosemite where he cultivated a passion for long, committing granite climbs. He has since climbed many of the long classic free climbs of the Valley as well as El Capitan five times, including a solo ascent. Matt is an AMGA Certified Rock and Alpine guide who started guiding in California in 2003 sharing his passion with folks from Mt Shasta to Mt Whitney and everything in between. Since 2008, Matt has guided extensively outside of California leading clients on more than 70 successful summits of Mt Rainier and expeditions to the Cordillera Blanca in Peru, Mt Vinson in Antarctica, and Aconcogua in Argentina. While not working, he enjoys long ski tours in the Eastern Sierra, ice climbing, and rock climbing in Utah, Wyoming, California, or wherever the conditions are good.
** It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we have to announce that the world lost Matt to the mountains in May of 2014 while guiding for another guide service on the Liberty Ridge of Mount Rainier. 6 climbers including 2 guides were killed in an avalanche while on the route. The mountains claim lives often, and we have lost a number of our close mountain brothers and sisters over the years. This one really hit home for us and we have decided to leave Matt’s name up on our website for a while. He will always be an SMG guide, and we miss him.
