Custom Trip Proposal for Neal Muelebrouck
The Sierra Hut to Hut is the best hut supported fastpacking trip in the High Sierra. The Evolution Loop features the most wild and scenic section of the John Muir Trail. Put the two together and you get an incredible combination of comfort and wilderness that few have ever had the privilege of experiencing. This itinerary has never been guided except by Sierra Mountain Guides, because we invented it. We can’t wait to show you what all of the great masses in Yosemite and on Mount Whitney have been missing!
|TRIP ITINERARY: Custom Hut to Hut + Fastpacking|
|Day 0||Check in to your hotel and meet in Bishop at the Sierra Mountain Guides office for final packing and preparations. Please join us for an early dinner in town that evening if you would like. Stay at the Creekside Inn, the best hotel in Bishop.|
|Day 1||Early shuttle up to Mosquito Flat Trailhead in Rock Creek (10,000+ ft.). Enjoy a beautiful hike up Little Lakes Valley and up over Mono Pass. Here we encounter a surreal moonscape and some unbelievable trail running on a long, gradual descent past the Mono Recesses, and down to Lake Thomas Edison. We ferry across the lake to the Vermillion Valley Resort where we have real fishing lodge-style accommodations complete with heat, showers, beds, and a real restaurant. 17 miles. Total Vertical Gain/Loss: +2300'/-4900'|
|Day 2||Early breakfast at the Resort and back on the ferry to where we left the trail the day prior. We head up to the Pacific Crest Trail (and John Muir Trail) where we turn South and follow Bear Creek up to picturesque alpine lakes and meadows beneath Selden Pass. From the spectacular vistas of the pass we descend on perfect trails amidst fantastic little lakes. This eventually leads to a big descent to the South Fork of the San Joaquin River which leads to Muir Trail Ranch, a rare, historic, private inholding in the wilderness 5.5 miles upstream from Florence Lake. The Ranch is idyllic with cabins, wonderful home cooking, and natural hot springs pools. This is right where every big mountain day should end. 21.5 miles. Total Vertical Gain/Loss: +4500'/-4500'|
|Day 3||Enjoy the morning and breakfast at Muir Trail Ranch. Pick up our fastpacking equipment there and embark on the fastpacking part of our journey. As a light recovery day, we will ascend Evolution Valley to our own lightweight camp near the Darwin Bench cutoff. 12.5 miles. Total Vertical Gain/Loss: +2500'/-300'. If feeling energetic with enough daylight left we can take a short day hike up to the idyllic Darwin Bench, or perhaps scramble up a nearby peak.|
|Day 4||After breakfast, hike up into the incredible Evolution Basin, past some of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the High Sierra. Descend sharply into Le Conte Canyon and we will camp in the cradle of Little Pete Meadow with nearby views of the Citadel and Mount Langille. We will be met by our porters/camp cooks here. 13.5 miles. Total Vertical Gain/Loss: +2100'/-3200'|
|Day 5||From here we ditch our multiday packs for the porters to carry to enable us to go light and fast. With an alpine start and some energy, we may be able to ascend to the summit of Mount Agassiz, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Sierra, before crossing over Bishop Pass and down through the scenic Eastside scenery with its gorgeous lakes and colorful rocks. We finish at the trailhead at South Lake where our shuttle driver meets us. 13 miles. Total Vertical Gain/Loss: +5400'/-4400'. We can enjoy a well-deserved at Parcher's Resort then continue down to Bishop for the end of a great journey. Stay in Bishop at the Creekside Inn|
