Intro to Lead Climbing

Can I get the rope up there? You have been top rope climbing for some time now, maybe you lead climb at your local gym, and are feeling prepared to take the next step.
This 2 day course will give you the skills to sport and traditional lead climb in single pitch terrain. Max guiding ratio 4:1 with a minimum of 3 to run.
This course is currently only offered as custom private trip.

Day 1:
We will meet at Black Velvet Coffee in Mammoth Lakes at 8am.
Following introductions, we will discuss our goals and objectives for the course, sort gear, look at the guidebook, and pack our bags for the day.
We will carpool to a classic area nearby such as Benton Crags, Iris Slabs, or Horseshoe Slabs.
The first day’s focus will be the lead climbing team, placing and removing gear, and anchoring principles.
We will return to Mammoth by 5pm.
Day 2:
We will meet at 8am and carpool to another location.
Anchor cleaning, lowering and rappelling will first be covered.
Participants will mock lead & lead belay, with instructors and fellow participants giving feedback.
We will discuss the mental challenges with lead climbing and ways to manage these as well as how to fall and catch.
We will return to Mammoth by 4:30pm to debrief until 5pm.

Belay device(s): plate (ie. ATC), assisted braking (ie. GriGri)
*Cams, nuts
*Draws and slings
*4 locking carabiners/ 4 non-lockers
*Anchor cleaning tether: PAS or 4 foot nylon sling
Participants are encouraged to bring their own gear such as harness, helmet, shoes, belay devices, as well as rock protection, draws, and cordalette. It’s advantageous to get accustomed to using your gear.
