Custom guided rock climbing is all about going where you want, when you want, and with who you want.

    Here is how it works:

Step 1:  Click the Customize button for trip options.
Step 2:  We will contact you as soon as possible to confirm the itinerary and guide availability on requested dates, and we will present you with a custom proposal and price quote.

Join SMG for a rock climbing trip of a lifetime!

We will customize any program to your specifications.

The Eastern Sierra is the undisputed, year-round rock climbing mecca of North America (and possibly the world).

A hugely diverse rock climbing playground. You can climb granite cracks in the morning and pull on volcanic pockets in the afternoon. The weather can’t be beat. There are more perfectly climbable days per year here than any other major climbing venue we know of. The region features crags and climbs at all elevations in the deepest valley in North America, the Owens Valley, and has a great variety of rock types. We probably don’t have to point out to you that Bishop is both a world class bouldering destination and that the High Sierra has some of the best alpine rock climbing on the planet. Sunny skies, perfect temps, and the best rock in the world – you’ll see why we love climbing here in our home range. Let Sierra Mountain Guides to show you around to get the most out of your trip to this incredible place!

But maybe you want to go check out exotic Morocco? Or go climb Red Rock multipitch sandstone adventure routes? Climb in the historic and picturesque Italian Dolomites or on the sparkling orange alpine granite high above the town of Chamonix, France on the massif of Mont Blanc. Custom guided rock climbing is all about going where you want, when you want, and with who you want.

    Eastern Sierra Custom Pricing

The Eastern Sierra is our backyard. We live and work here year round, and there is no place we would rather be! Custom prices are per person per day, based upon the length of the day and the guest:guide ratio. The chart below makes it easy to estimate the base price of any custom program we might offer in the Sierra. This is the price for the guiding and all associated group gear, permit fees, and all other administrative costs. Base prices do not include: any of your travel or lodging costs, porters, packers, rental equipment, or other additional items. We will customize any program to your specifications and we are happy to give you a price quote that is inclusive of any additional services. We arrange this at no extra charge to you and we often have access to special deals not offered to the public, that we extend to you. Ask about our group rates too!

    Half Day: 4 hours
    Full Day: 4-10 hours
Big Day: 10 or more hours, requires pre-screening by our staff
Multiday: any day with a night out for the guide on either end

    Outside of the Eastern Sierra
Custom prices outside of our home area are calculated the same way as our local prices and the guiding is based on the same rates. We add associated costs of: transportation and logistical elements, lifts, helicopters, snow cats, boats, small planes, porters/packers/jeeps, lodging and transportation, and any additional features or services as needed and desired. Some programs require that we go through a partner operator and we may then be subject to their fee structure and their policies. Full travel day or trip prep for the guide(s) is generally charged at $200 per guide/day and the guide is given a $50/day food stipend when away from home.
Costs of international programs can be difficult to estimate, but this is the general method we use. We love to travel and guide, and planning custom guided trips within a budget is our specialty. Over the years we have become very good at it. We are certain you will not find an adventure travel agency, outfitter, or guide service that can do a better job putting together a custom guided trip-of-a-lifetime. at such a low price to value ratio, for the types of experiences we offer.

     Eastern Sierra Rock Climbing Highlights:

Owens River Gorge Long, challenging routes, mostly sport, rating from 5.7 to 5.13.  The climbs ascend vertical or gently overhanging welded volcanic tuff with holds ranging from rounded edges to pockets, crimps and plates.  The best seasons are the spring and fall, yet winter can be perfectly warm in the sun and the summer cool in the morning shade.  The Owens River, which was dammed by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and has now been restored supports a lively riparian habitat.  The sound of the gurgling river and the sweet song of the Canyon Wren, in contrast to the raging pump in your forearms conveys the supreme glory of the Gorge. Best Season: Fall, Winter, Spring
IMG_5096 Pine Creek A once popular and extremely scenic granite climbing venue has had a major renaissance in the past decade. Crack, sport, and mixed rock climbs of a variety of lengths abound here in this transition between the high desert and the Sierra alpine. Best Season: Spring, Fall
Sarah C. sends as usual on Cardinal Pinnacle Cardinal Pinnacle The most accessible piece of splitter alpine granite in the range. Climb 4-5 pitch routes consisting of classic cracks, stems, and flakes in the shadow of the Evolution Range above Bishop. Best Season: Spring, Summer, Fall
IMG_0984 Mammoth Lakes Area The Mammoth area host a variety of excellent granite climbing. Horseshoe Slabs is a super-accessible place to learn and practice the basics. The Dike Wall is a 5.10-11 climbing paradise - impeccable stone in an idyllic subalpine setting. Crystal Crag is one of our favorite introductory 4-5 hour alpine ridge traverses with exciting climbing up to 5.5 or 5.8 depending on the variation. There are also a nice crag there for extending the day. Nearby, Mammoth Crest hosts some great multipitch crack climbs. If you want some accessible sport climbing close to town, check out the Warming Wall with shorter but interesting climbs n the 5.8-5.11 range. Best Season: Summer for Mammoth Lakes Basin | Fall, Spring for Warming Wall
IMG_5111 Rock Creek Canyon The name of the place says it all. Iris Slab is a great place for coaching and practice for novices trying to transition to outdoor rock climbing. The Gong Show Area is an amazing sport, trad, and mixed crag with 1-3 pitch climbs on sparkling granite walls. Patricia Bowl is a crack climbing paradise for those who are climbing in the 5.9-10a range.  Best Season: Spring, Summer, Fall
IMG_1053 Clarks Canyon Pocketed volcanic tuff for everyone, with mostly single pitch sport climbing in the 5.6-5.11 range. Pastoral setting about 30 minutes North and East of Mammoth Lakes. High concentration of routes makes it easy to climb a ton of pitches in a session.
IMG_5057 Granite Basin We love this area outside of Lee Vining off of Highway 120 East. A prominent granite spire rises up out of the high desert above all the rest and there are a number of exciting multi pitch routes on it. Ou favorite is a Vern Clevenger Route called Hairraiser Buttress, a bolted, 3 pitch, granite climb of impeccable quality at the 5.9 grade. Best Season: Spring, Fall
0056 Whitney Portal Overshadowed by the climbing on Mt. Whitney, Mount Russell, and Lone Pine Peak, it’s easy to miss the granite adventure climbs right at the Portal. Premier Buttress is a great tune up climb for the East Buttress or East Face of Whitney.  You could easily spend a week here, situated in a nice campground, and barely even scratch the surface. Climbs start at around 5.8-9 in difficulty. Best Season: Spring, Fall
0087 Alabama Hills If you like the rock of Joshua Tree, then the A-Hills are your jam. Roll out of your car and walk a few short steps to fun bolted granite sport climbing in the mostly 5.6-5.10 range. Tons of excellent climbing dispersed throughout the landscape where all of the old Hollywood Western movies were filmed. Perfect place for groups, and kids! Only a 3 hour drive from Los Angeles and much easier logistically than a trip to J-Tree. More low key too! Best Season: Fall, Winter, Spring
evolv1x1 Bishop Bouldering Come see what all the buzz is about. We can help you get oriented to finding the classic problems of the area and can help you with pad rentals. We also can coach you in the basics of staying safe when setting up for problems and how to leave the minimum impact on the fragile areas where these amazing boulders are located. Best season: Fall, Winter, Spring
20090312-15_WinterWhitney-030 Sierra Nevada High Country Saving the best for last, the alpine granite of the High Sierra is absolutely world class. Guiding on the lofty summits, sweeping ridges. and glowing faces of the range is our specialty and we always love to show you where a bit of rock climbing knowledge and skill can take you out here. Best Season: Summer
