A Via Feratta adventure unlike any other!

A Via Feratta adventure unlike any other! This itinerary was developed with SMG by our partners at Holimites, and their mountain guides who live and work in the Dolomites. This is a spectacular hut to hut journey with via ferrata along the route. Climb one of the high Dolomite peaks, Monte Antelao and circumnavigate the town of Cortina D’Ampezzo. This is an incredible week for anyone who enjoys adventurous, multiday, mountain hiking and wants to experience the thrill of rock climbing without the usual technical difficulties.

This trip is reservable as a custom itinerary at customized pricing.  Please contact the SMG office to inquire.

One of the most remarkable gems of the Earth.

Bravo! You are about to discover one of the most remarkable gems of the Earth, the Italian Dolomites. This inspiring landscape, located near the Italy-Austria border, was industrialized during World War 1, to create a way for troops to move easily across extremely rugged mountain terrain to mobilize to strategic positions. Via Ferrata means “Iron Path” and that term accurately describes how unscalable rock walls and ridges were transformed into climbing “trails.” Over the last century, the via ferratas have slowly been upgraded into an historic, yet modernized, way for people to experience rugged mountain travel without great risk or expert climbing skills. Via Ferrata provide access to the otherwise inaccessible, but they can be challenging to travel, demanding plenty of full-body exertion, an ability to handle exposure, specialized safety equipment, and a sense of adventure. With the help of some of our close friends who live and work in these mountains, we have put together a unique itinerary that links all of the most classic, dramatic, and challenging via ferratas encircling Cortina d’Ampezzo with the Dolomites High Route (Alta Via) trail system to create an athletic, hut to hut journey like nothing else you will ever experience.

    Day -1

    Arrive in Venice, Italy.

    Day 0

Pick up by private shuttle at your hotel in Venice. Travel to the Northern region of the Dolomites known as the Alta Badia.

    Day 1

Day hike. Via ferrata instruction and warm-up. Stay at same hotel.

    Day 2

From Badia, hike the Forcella dal Lago and Ferrata Veronesi. Stay at the Rifugio Lagazuoi near Cinque Torri and the site of a great WWI battle. 6-7 hours.

    Day 3

A big day. Climb Ferratta Lipella, one of the more prestigious of ferratas in the Dolomites with tunnels, summit ridges, and high places with stunning scenery to the summit of Tofana di Rozes. Descend to Rifugio Dibona. 7-8 hours.

    Day 4

A grand traverse on via Ferrata of some significant peaks. Hike toward Punta Anna to link up with Ferrata Olivieri, considered one of the most interesting and beautiful via ferratas in the Dolomites, over the stunning Tofana di Mezzo, to Ferrata Formenton. Descend via chairlift to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Transport to the town of San Vito di Cadore and walk to the Rifugio San Marco. 6-7 hours.

    Day 5

Climb Monte Antelao. This day our goal is to summit a great peak of the Dolomites. The climb is long and strenuous but quite aesthetic and not so technical. The elevation gain is 1440 meters (4700 feet) from the hut to the summit, so we will get an alpine start. The difficulty is Class 3-4 and we will use a rope, but technical rock climbing skills are not necessary. 6-7 hours, and we will return to stay at the same hut.

    Day 6

An awesome day covering a lot of ground. From the hut, hike the Alta Via to Ferrata Berti. Continue down beneath the glaciers of the Sorapis Group to Rifugio Vendelli for a snack. Onward to the road at Tre Croci Pass and across the valley to access the lift up to Rifugio Lorenzi at 3000 meters. 6-7 hours.

    Day 7

The hut puts us in a spectacular position to finish via a traverse of the Cristallo Ridge on the Ferrata Dibona, and then down to the Rifugio Ospitale where we celebrate an amazing journey while we wait for our private shuttle back to the start of the trip. After the Dolomites:

    Day 8

Transport to Venice by private shuttle.
